Space flight celebrates 60th anniversary and looks to the future

It’s getting to be quite a long time since the first human space flight.

Sixty years ago, on April 12, 1961 – nearly 58 years after the Wright Brothers made the first powered flight – Yuri Gagarin orbited the Earth in the Vostok 3KA-3 capsule, proving that humans could indeed travel into space and return safety.

In preparation of the upcoming Preliminary Design Review (PDR) for the International Habitat (IHAB) module for the Lunar Gateway space station, �׻�� Alenia Space teamed up with the European Space Agency’s European Astronaut Center (EAC) last week to virtually review the IHAB’s functional volumes and related crew accommodations. All teams involved in this virtual session, including astronauts, are preparing for life around Moon orbit by focusing on habitability requirements to enable the crew to sleep, eat, manage stowage and conduct science experiments.

HALO: first component of Gateway cislunar space station takes shape

Lunar Gateway’s Habitation And Logistics Outpost (HALO) is moving forwards. �׻�� Alenia Space, in coordination with prime contractor Northrop Grumman, marks a first major milestone regarding the Lunar quest: the welding of two components, a ring and a cylinder for HALO, initiating the assembly of the module’s primary structure. This memorable moment happened recently in our Turin plant.

Tranquility and Cupola, a stellar combo benefiting mankind since 2010

Eleven years ago to the day, the Space Shuttle Endeavour lifted off with two new modules for the International Space Station: Node 3, dubbed Tranquility, and the Cupola. Both were designed, integrated and tested by �׻�� Alenia Space in Turin, Italy. The two modules were docked to the ISS a few days after the launch, to the great satisfaction of all astronauts involved.

�׻�� Alenia Space to provide the study for European Space Agency’s Cis-Lunar Transfer Vehicle - CLTV

Turin, January 29, 2020 – �׻�� Alenia Space, joint venture between �׻�� (67%) and Leonardo (33%) has signed a contract with European Space Agency (ESA), worth € 4,5 Million, for the study of Cis-Lunar Transfer Vehicle (CLTV), a transportation logistic space vehicle to be used for a variety of missions: from the logistic resupply of Lunar Gateway pressurized modules, to the transportation of space infrastructure in low Earth orbit, and the potential use in future missions in support of the European Large Logistic Lander (EL3).

Turin, December 7, 2020 – �׻�� Alenia Space, the joint company between �׻�� (67%) and Leonardo (33%), has signed a contract with Northrop Grumman to develop the pressurized module for HALO (Habitation And Logistics Outpost) that will be one of the first two elements to form the lunar Gateway which will be launched in late 2023.
